| Whitesell constructing major distribution center for Christmas ...
In the past five years, the massive Haines Industrial Center has attracted major retailers such as Sports Authority, Home Depot, BJ's Wholesale Club and National Freight. Each leases warehouse space in the 800-acre center, which straddles the Florence- Burlington Township border along Route 130. Now Whitesell Construction Co., owner of the center, is adding another tenant to its roster. Christmas Tree Shops, a subsidiary of home furnishings retailer Bed Bath & Beyond, could occupy a new distribution center by the beginning of 2008, Whitesell officials said. The building is under construction on 66 acres along Daniel Way in the Florence section of the center. Whitesell started the 721,000-square-foot structure in December and is expected to complete it by the end of the year, said Richard Cureton, president of Whitesell.
Kanu seeks Portsmouth respect
Nigeria striker Nwankwo Kanu says he expects Portsmouth officials to reciprocate his loyalty by offering him a more lucrative offer than the one-year extension on the table. The 30-year-old joined the Premiership side on a one-year contract last August and after 12 goals this season, he expects better treatment from the Premiership club. "The club know how committed I am because I've had to play four games with a bad knee when other strikers were out with injuries," the Super Eagle told BBC Sport. "I have been travelling four hours shuttling between London and Portsmouth while I also give 100 per cent every time I play, which shows sacrifice and commitment on my part. "Now it's all down to the people I've given so much to also turn around and reciprocate that commitment." Kanu says the one-year extension proposed by manager Harry Redknapp is highly disrespectful.
Top story lines to watch in these playoffs
It's one of the great debates, right up there with "Less filling versus tastes great" or "Betty versus Veronica." Offense versus defense. The old adage suggests you cannot win in the playoffs without great defense, and yet the Carolina Hurricanes proved a season ago that "great" is a relative term. This season, the issue might be brought into closer focus with the fortunes of the New Jersey Devils, Dallas Stars and Vancouver Canucks. The three are the lowest-scoring teams in the playoffs. Does it matter? In the past five playoffs, the lowest-scoring team has advanced beyond the first round just once (Minnesota Wild in 2003). Then, there are the Buffalo Sabres, who were the most prolific team in the league this season with 308 goals. Yet, only twice in the last 20 years has the NHL's top offensive team gone on to Stanley Cup glory (Penguins in 1992 and Oilers in 1987).
Humboldt plays for state ticket
The second-ranked Humboldt boys are rested, hungry and coming off what head coach Craig Orness called their best performance to date in a district championship rout of Clear Lake last Saturday. Whether that will be enough to overcome No. 3 Carroll in Iowas premier Class 3A substate final here Tuesday remains to be seen. The unbeaten Wildcats (23-0 overall) and Tigers (22-1) square off in a heavyweight clash at Fort Dodge Senior High this evening, with one of eight 3A state tournament bids on the line. Game time is set for 7 p.m. Ornesss squad didnt know who their substate opponent would be until late last night. Carroll edged Nevada in a twice-delayed district final at Perry, 48-44. Now, the road-weary Tigers must make their second one-hour tournament trip in as many days to take on a Humboldt team thats been off since clubbing Clear Lake 71-35 over the weekend.
Spurs Mailbag
We decided to go ahead and empty the Mailbag one last time before the playoffs pick up in earnest. As for the 746 of you who have emailed in the past few weeks to ask, "Can we beat Dallas?" you might want to start questioning whether the Spurs will be able to get out of the first round. Are you finally starting to see the light, Johnny? Can you now envision how the Spurs could beat Dallas in a 7-game series? It's hard to imagine Dallas beating the Spurs in a 7-game series. Unless of course Duncan has a bad foot again like last year. Jackson, San Antonio Of course, I can envision it. But I also frequently envision myself joyously living out the rest of my life next to Scarlett Johansson and, according to her representatives, that's not going to happen.
