Why Tablet PCs Haven't Gone Mainstream

While tablet PCs are accepted in increasing numbers by medical personnel, insurance adjusters and other vertical users, why haven't they gone mainstream?

Analysts cite at least eight reasons why tablets haven't done better, including their higher cost compared with standard laptops (up to $300 more), problems with touch technology and handwriting recognition software, and a shortage of suitable applications.

Recognizing those problems, tablet PC makers recently introduced new second- and third-generation devices in both the convertible and slate form factors. More new models are expected later this year running the Vista operating system, which will eliminate the separate Tablet PC Edition in Windows XP and the resulting inefficiencies, analysts said.

"Tablet PCs remain a niche product in the marketplace, used predominantly in vertical applications," said Leslie Fiering, an analyst at Gartner Inc.

Plumas County news on-line

With the recent mild weather and spring-time conditions, access onto the National Forest has occurred earlier than usual. In many places roads and adjacent areas are wet and saturated. There have been recent incidents of resource damage from irresponsible off highway vehicles use. This has resulted in costly road damage and negative impacts to fish and wildlife.

"I encourage individuals who either witness, or have knowledge of illegal OHV riding or damage from these activities to contact the Lassen NF," said Al Vazquez, Almanor District ranger. With the number of OHV operators rapidly growing every year, the repeated and often unintentional misuse of an OHV can quickly create environmental damage. By using common sense and taking a few precautions, OHV operators can assure that the areas on the Lassen NF they frequent will remain available and in good condition.

Granato has filed suit against parent company of 610

Houston radio talk show host John Granato has filed suit against the parent company of KILT (610 AM), claiming that the station has violated his contract.

Granato, who co-hosts KILTs morning drive time show, has asked a Harris County state district court to declare the contract invalid and to prevent CBS Radio from enforcing a non-compete clause that would prevent him from working on air for another station for six months after leaving KILT.

Granatos contract runs through Nov. 30. The suit was filed late last week with the Harris County district clerks office and assigned to Judge Jennifer Walker Elrod of the 190th state District Court.

Granato is the second Houston sports radio personality in recent years to ask a Houston judge to vacate a non-compete agreement. In December 2004, state District Judge Randy Walker ruled that KILT could not enforce its non-compete clause with talk show host Charlie Pallilo, which freed Pallilo to begin work immediately for KBME (790 AM).

Online Gambling, Imus and America Under Seige

Popular sports commentator / handicapper voices his outrage over recent attempts by some politicians in the US to quash online gambling while transcending their efforts into other arenas such as free speech (a la the Don Imus flap this past week).

Tony George of www.sportsaudioshows.com:

Isn't our society getting alittle bit touchy and alittle over the top when it comes right down to it? As I watch the news, or read articles on-line, not only from sports gaming sites, but mainstream sports websites, as well as regular headline news, I am sickened by what our society has become. Politicians who are overzealous, money grubbing, egotistical idiots who have no idea about what their constituents really think about today's
