Revisiting the mind of Utah and its Internet search choices

A story published in the Salt Lake Tribune in August, titled "Google Trends: The Mind of Utah," made some interesting and funny, yet unscientific allegations about the Internet searches of area residents. The idea that a city's "cyberspace doppelganger" can be determined by charting its top Internet search terms is an intriguing one, and Google Trends helps make that kind of study accessible.

However, the story offered a selection of search terms that seemed aimed at digging up the "mundane, bizarre, ribald, homey, gluttonous, addictive and slightly perverse and surreal world" of Salt Lake City.

Celts sever ties with Brooklyn-native Telfair

(Yonkers - WABC, April 24, 2007) - The Boston Celtics announced on Tuesday that they are severing ties with ties with guard Sebastian Telfair, a Brooklyn-native who once graced the cover of Sports Illustrated as a senior in high school, just days after he was arrested in the New York area and charged with carrying a loaded gun in his car.

Football star bids for pro-golf card

Former Premiership hard man Julian Dicks, 38, is among more than 350 golfers hoping to earn their places on the 2007 PGA EuroPro Tour. Dicks, who, before his retirement from football, had 315 appearances for West Ham and represented England at Under-21 level on four occasions, took part in Stage One of the 2007 PartyPoker.com Qualifying School. The leading performers in this week's two-round 1st stage will move on to next week's 2nd Stage with the best players then going on to securing a spot on the tour, which is regarded as the leading developmental golf tour in Europe. Sadly for Dicks, who also played for Liverpool and Birmingham City, his chances right now don't look too good after a first round 81 at the Stoke-by-Nayland Golf Club in Colchester, Essex. Stage One of Qualifying School is played over four different locations and the best performance of the day came from former British Amateur Champion Brian McElhinney, who shot a 7-under 65 at The Bedford in Bedfordshire.

Yahoo Sports Close to Acquiring Rivals.com

Yahoo is close to acquiring college sports network rivals.com, its biggest sports acquisition since Broadcast.com, reports paidContent.org.

The price could reach an estimated $100 million, which is overpriced according to paidContent: "One exec involved in online sports acquisitions told us $50-75 million would be more realistic given a model that can - and has been - replicated."

But the acquisition would be a boost to Yahoo Sports, which has been looking for ways to catch up with ESPN.com and deal with FoxSports.com.

Yahoo already has a sports-content sharing deal with Rivals.com, which also supplies content to USAToday.com, AOL Sports, SportingNews.com, MSNBC.com and SI.com.

Ask 411 Movies for 2.19.07: Annual President’s Day Mattress Sale ...

Jerry Lewis made The Day the Clown Cried in 1972. He used his own money to finish the project, but the rights had already lapsed and the original screenwriter refused for the film to be released due to the changes Lewis made to the script and the main character. In the movie, Lewis plays a Jewish clown who leads children to the gas chambers in World War II internment camps. Alec Baldwin directed and starred in an update of The Devil and Daniel Webster in 2001, which might finally see a limited release this spring. The problem there was that the FBI froze all assets of certain investors in the film due to bank fraud. Anthony Hopkins plays Webster with Jennifer Love Hewitt as the Devil. Now if she did a remake of the The Devil in Miss Jones I'd watch it. The Marx Brothers first film was an unreleased and thought now lost short film in 1921 called Humor Risk.

10-Apr-2007 : British Media U-Turn on Snow Conditions This Winter

This winter the ski industry has been cursing the British media for painting such a bleak, one dimensional picture of snow conditions in the Alps. If you skied post-February above 1800m, you will know that the reports were little more than scaremongering, if you didnt, check out the following article that appeared in The Telegraph on 31st March for a more balanced view of a ski season that started badly but improved at altitude. The snow lies deep across much of the Alps this weekend, with skiers and snowboarders enjoying groomed pistes and perfect powder in the higher resorts. This season has been described as the worst for winter sports in two generations, but, as it moves into its final month, reports of the demise of European skiing are greatly exaggerated. Popular destinations from Val d'Isre and Les Arcs to Zermatt, Cervinia, and St Anton are currently in superb shape and are at their best for the time of year.

Angle 'one of the best defensive centerfielders ever' at OSU

He is a coach's dream; a consummate hustler who leaves it all on the field; a leader by example whose work ethic inevitably rubs off on his younger teammates; a truly unselfish player whose main concern is the numbers in the win-loss columns rather than personal statistics.

The player is Ohio State junior centerfielder Matt Angle, who coach Bob Todd refers to as "one of the best defensive centerfielders ever to play at Ohio State."

A four-sport star in high school, the junior began his OSU career in right field, switched to center last year and was first-team All-Big Ten last year and is currently batting .372 with 15 RBIs and 13 stolen bases.

Long before Angle's name was mentioned in the upper-echelon of all those to come before him, he was a star at Columbus' Whitehall-Yearling high school.
