Test Riding Or Paddling Is A Good Way To Pick Up A Summer Sport
Many people want to take up a summer sport, but stop short because they just are not sure where to start. According to staff at Downwind Sports in Houghton, buying a bike, a boat or backpacking gear is a large purchase. They recommend test riding or paddling the equipment before purchasing it, so you know if it's the right item for you. Arnie Konis, owner of Downwind says, "A great way for them to do that is to come on by. Usually starting mid-May, we have weekly kayak demos at the Houghton Beach and also in Marquette." Custom road and mountain bikes average $500. Kayaks and canoes range from $300 to over $1000 a piece. While the cost of a bike includes everything but a helmet, the price tag on the kayaks only includes the boat. .
WFNZ's Packer knows talk-radio perils
"Listen, in our world, when you're on the spot like we are, you're always going to be at the mercy of the consequences of crossing the line," said Packer, host of "Primetime With The Packman" on WFNZ (610-AM). "Sports, politics, cooking, it doesn't matter. It's always a possibility when you're on live." Packer is ringleader of a sports talk show that sometimes veers toward, shall we say, the politically incorrect. It's true "guy radio," not a place for the easily offended. Packer was taken aback by Imus' sexually and racially charged comments April 4 about members of the Rutgers women's basketball team, words that cost him his radio show Thursday. "I thought he crossed the line," said Packer. "I thought what he did was absolutely stupid. But he's apologized." What the whole Imus affair has underscored, Packer said, are the perils of the off-the-cuff nature of live talk radio.
Sports physicals to be held at area schools
IRONWOOD -- Students who plan to participate in any school sport program, and will be in grades 7 through 12 during the 2007-08 school year, must have a sports' physical. Providers from the Grand View Clinic will conduct the sports' physicals at each of the area schools. If students are unable to attend on the day the physical is offered at their school, they may attend at any of the other schools. The cost is $15 if the physical is done at the school. Payment is due to Grand View Clinic at the time of the physical. Forms are available at the schools and must have a parent or legal guardian signature. Students who wear glasses must bring them to the physical for the vision test. Physicals will be offered at Luther L.
Virginia Tech Shootings Hit Too Close to Home
At the risk of being accused of serving as a shameless company shill, let me just say that one of the more illuminating takes on last week's unspeakable carnage at Virginia Tech was offered up to listeners by my friend and long-time colleague Tony Kornheiser at the start of his two-hour daily sort-of-sports talk show on Washington Post Radio last Tuesday morning. Less than 24 hours after the shootings, Kornheiser spoke for 15 uninterrupted minutes at the top of the broadcast, delivering a brilliant, totally unscripted monologue straight from the heart and mind of a parent with two college students of his own. As I listened to a tape a few days later, Kornheiser put into words many of the same thoughts -- though better said -- that kept running through my mind earlier in the week, once my own son called home from his dormitory room 500 yards from where the first two murders took place to report that he was obviously shaken, but mercifully safe.
